I don't believe the problem was with libtool itself, but in the way it was
being used.

You are talking to the wrong person. I am in the 'libtool is evil'
camp(*) and have avoided dealing with it at all costs.

(*)more correctly, the 'libtool is a necessary evil, which makes life on
a linux system more difficult' camp.
