All my accounts are gone!

So I'm using Gnucash 1.6.1 from the Debian unstable archive, and it is a 
great system.  But just now, I went to pay some bills, and the opening 
Accounts screen is completely blank!  I re-opened my accounts file, and 
everything is still blank!  I am very depressed at the thought of having 
to recreate all this information - especially since the file format 
appears to be non-ASCII so it is hard to see how I might ever recover 
from this problem.  Does anyone have any ideas for me?
