The file format *is* ASCII -- XML in fact -- so you should be able to
open the file in a text editor and have a look at what's going on.  
The names of the tags in the file are pretty self-explanatory; you
should be able to locate your chart of accounts in the first section of
the file.  

If you can't find anything that makes sense, double check that you are
trying to open the same file that you made edits to.  Gnucash will by
default open the last file that you visited, so you may need to
explicitly Open the file that contains your data.
