There is a substantial amount of work that needs to go into building
and testing and setting up a consistent install environment. There is
serious value-add in putting together a distro, be it for linux as a
whole, or gnome in particular. Very very few individuals build thier
own linux distro from scratch. Similarly, very very few build gnome
from scratch. Its hard work. Just having the source code, even if its
'identical', is not enough: like having puzzle pieces, there's still
'some' assembly required.

Gnucash's biggest 'mistake' was failing to synchronize to the gnome 1.4
release. This lead in part to the nasty library dependencies. The
difficulty of a gnucash 'do-it-yourself' install high-lights the kind
of value-add that precompiled distros, whether ximian, redhat or debian,
bring to the consumer.
