Getting crazy intalling gnucash-1.6.X on a SuSE 7.2 system

Hi group,

isn't out there a _working_ description on how to install gnucash-1.6.X
on a SuSE 7.2 system?
It is a mess with all this different libraries (versions)!
I started with 1.6.5 trying to compile it on my system. A couple
of libs were missing.
So I tried a pre-compiled version of gnucash-1.6.4, downloaded
MBytes of Libs and finally got to the point were I could start
gnucash without an error message about missing libraries. But I
got the following error:
 Could not find platform independent libraries <prefix>
 Could not find platform dependent libraries <exec_prefix>
 Consider setting $PYTHONHOME to <prefix>[:<exec_prefix>]
 'import site' failed; use -v for traceback
 Fatal Python error: couldn't import os
 Abgebrochen
Any idea?
I tried a pre-compiled version of gnucash-1.6.1 and got the same
message.

Any help is welcome. Maybe someone out there wrote a 'Installation
handbook' for a SuSE system?
