Is this related to the fact that umlauts used in text "disappear" when the
first report is opened (if there are accounts with umlauts), and that no
umlauts can be entered further on, making gnucash literally unuseable for
German users?

I have updated to the latest gnucash 1.6.5 and Guppi 0.40.1, which is the
latest RPM I could find for SuSE 7.3, and I couldn't see anything which might
be related in the 0.40.2 changelog.

(I would have rebuild it anyway, but recompiling a GNOME library is more than
a royal pain)
