Download from bank

I am interested in switching from M$ Money so I no longer have to boot to Windows to do my finances.  I was wondering how to pull information from on-line sources.  In some cases, I am able to download a qif file from the bank's site.  That is great and works well.  In others though, the bank states that the transaction must be done from within Money or Quicken.  Is this feature what the Quicken Import project refers to as QIF processing?  I currently use a 1.4.? version (sorry, linux machine at home and I'm not), but will attempt to go to tip if this is in the works.  I am really rooting for GnuCash - finance software is my last tie to the Windows world :)
