Opening Balances for Mutual Funds

I have just started using gnucash for the first time today. I am transfering over from quicken.

I am trying to set up a Mutual Fund Asset and a Money Market Asset. Both have balances already and yet I cannot start them with an opening balance. 

Any suggestions on how to get around this? 

Also are there any good links or manuals on the web for a new user like me. I have read the help file that came with gnucash. But I still have a lot of questions. 

Any help you could give will be appreciated.
