the answer here is simple: Don't try to install the .tar.gz package. Instead, 
download and install SuSE's pre-compiled binary package, available online 
from 
http://www.suse.de/en/private/download/gnomes/i386/update_for_8_0/extra.html 
. They have a 1.6.5 available, which should do the job quite well.
