I don't remember what these files are, but yes, they're safe to delete
(best to do so while not running gnucash just to be sure).

Unless I'm thoroughly asleep, this is the backup file created by gnucash
when you converted from running a 1.4 series gnucash to running a 1.6
series gnucash. Provided you're happy with the way gnucash has been
running since you upgraded, yes it's safe to delete.
