I get pound signs

GNUcash 1.8.1 Mandrake 9.1

Check your international settings in KDE / Gnome which ever you use. You 
could also try using the the other one (e.g. if you you use gnome try it 
in KDE) to see if the problem disappears - if it does then its more than 
likely a setting in the desktop environment, if not it suggests its 
something in GNUcash.

I don't know about invoices, I haven't got that far yet.
