I've copied the list so that (assuming we actually resolve something) it's

It sounds like you're fundamental problem relates to fonts.  What are you 
using for a window manager?  Gnome, KDE, or <insert other window manager of 
your choice>

GNUCash is a Gnome app.  And a Gnome 1.4 app at that.  As such it relies on 
Gnome settings for things like fonts etc.  Theoretically it ought to rely on 
whatever your desktop settings are.  

Personally, I run KDE.  Assuming you're not running Gnome (big assumption) 
I've found the easiest thing to do is to log into a Gnome desktop once, 
change the fonts and things inside of the Gnome desktopm and running GnuCash 
to make sure everything looks right.  Once that's done, I can log out of 
Gnome, log back in under KDE and everything looks right.
