When building 1.7.8 under Suse8.1, I found that missing libraries were not 
always reported correctly by the configure script. You need to do a 'tail' on 
the configure log to find out the actual cause.

What I did was install the gnucash1.6 version from the Suse disk, which loaded 
up much of the Gnome stuff for me, then deleted it. When compiling 1.7.8 from 
source, here's a list of the libraries I had to install. Obviously, where 
there is a -devel version, that needs installing too.

gtk, gnome-libs, libglade, guile, slib, gtkhtml, libghttp, libxml, guppi,
gnome-print, esound, popt, gal, gdk-pixbuf, oaf, bonobo

I didn't need to make any further changes when upgrading to 1.8.0. Hope this
