GnuCash 1.8.0-1.RH8.0 refused to enter transaction

While running GnuCash, I am getting lots of warnings like this:

    Warning: PrintAmountInternal: Bad numeric.
    Warning: PrintAmountInternal: Bad numeric.
    Warning: PrintAmountInternal: Bad numeric.

After entering a number of transactions, GnuCash displayed this and
then refused to enter a transaction, blanking the entry as I skipped
forward via tabs:

    Error: check_open: transaction 0x90839d0 not open for editing

    Error: check_open:      Transaction.c:95 

I closed the register, saved everything, reopened the register
(*without* restarting GnuCash), and everything seemed to be okay.
