Paul,

this rings a bell in some remote corner of my memory: when I compiled the
source of 1.6.8 on a SuSE 7.3 box I encountered similar problems with
libdb and had to hack the configure script to get around it. (and
compiling GNOME from source and get all version dependencies right is just
a PITA).
