backing up to a cd-r disk - how to test it?

It cannot get the lock because the CD-R is ReadOnly.  Just click "open
anyways" and it should open up the data file.  Be warned that trying
to save the file will result in gnucash crashing (see
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=117657 for more information)
