GnuCash 1.8.0-1.RH8.0 refused to enter transaction

Fascinating.  I let my computer idle for a while to take care of a
delivery.  I had lunch, and came back.  I had a whole set (26 more) of
additional "Bad numeric." error messages but I hadn't been doing
anything!  GnuCash was actually displaying on a different desktop, so
I couldn't have even accidently typed something to trigger it.
