I use an HP 812C printer via USB in Linux (RH 9) all the time.  The
basic USB driver is built into Linux and the printer queue was easily
setup for my specific printer.

You want to print to Postscript.  The Linux driver takes the Postscript
and converts it to whatever is appropriate for your specific printer. 
Just be sure that your printer queue is configured for your printer.
