Well, yes debian (unstable) does use CVS -- or the last couple versions
have at least. The package name is "1.8.2" but it says 4/27 CVS on my
machine as well. I actually stopped tracking CVS on my machine, because
it is easier to just pull the latest debian packages which come out
quite frequently.
