I think this is the same problem that has been reported before with 1.8.2 and 
debian, see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=179342 . Maybe 
you should file a bug in debian. I cannot reproduce that behaviour over here 
(I have SuSE 8.2), though. If you got any helpful hints, you can put them in 
the German gnucash wiki FAQ http://linuxwiki.de/GnuCash
