Stock sale/balance sheet

I am having a problem with my balance sheet not balancing after 
recording the sale of a portion of my shares in a mutual fund.  I was 
not able to find anything it about realizing a gain/loss on a sale.  I 
am using Gnucash 1.8.1 on RedHat 9.0, and the only reference to selling 
shares I found was in the user's guide to record the amount received, 
and the # of shares as a negative number.  Any help will be greatly 
appreicated.
