gal library not found

When running the configure script for gnucash 1.8.3 on my SuSE 8.2 system, I get this message:

checking for main in -lgal... no
configure: error: gal library not found. See the README and config.log for more info.


I have these modules installed:
gal2-0-1.99.4-SuSE.jeo.1
gal-0.23-36
gal-devel-0.23-36
gal2-0-devel-1.99.4-SuSE.jeo.1
galeon-1.3.4-SuSE.jeo.2



What am I missing?
