Have you started X11 before starting Gnucash?
Assuming use use bash do you have:

. /sw/bin/init.sh

in your ~/.xinitrc and ~/.profile


And this in your ~/.profile

if [ ${#DISPLAY} -eq 0 ]; then
    export DISPLAY=':0.0'
  fi


If that doesn't help get back in touch.
