Dear Mike,
Check out this link:
http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/x11/x11.en.html
It explains a lot about many of the problems we run into in the OS X
world.
I have been playing around with my .xinitrc file (which I copied from
/private/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc ) and having it start up with KDE or
GnuCash instead of xterm. I was amazed (and delighted) that KDE started
and ran without causing any conflicts with OS X. It's nice to be able
to work in the Unix side of things with an OS that knows what to do
with the files it encounters. It makes things much easier for a Unix
novice like me to be able to tap into the power of Unix without having
to know all the commands (although I have been learning as I go).
Anyway, I know that this is a little off topic, but it should give OS X
users a glimmer of hope that these things really work and the solutions
are often simple ones.
