auto save?

Sure, click the "save" button every $x seconds/mins..  Quite easy
to achieve, actually.

If you're asking whether gnucash can be changed to do this
AUTOMATICALLY, well, I suppose it could, but frankly I'd rather spend
my time getting the embedded-sql code working so you don't NEED to
"save" data (as it's saved on every 'commit').
