Reports - newbie Q

I am using gnucash 1.8.7 on a debian system, and have been trying to figure 
out how the reporting system works.  It does not seem possible to save the 
option settings for a particular report once they have been modified.  Am I 
overlooking something?

Also,  on creating new reports:  I can code in scheme, but how do I add new 
reports to gnucash?  Does part of gnucash have to be rebuilt to incorporate 
the new reports?  The references given in the help documentation seem to be 
obsolete.  I have been looking at the source for 1.8.7 and 1.8.8.  is 
everything report related now in /src/report?
