What happened to the balance column in sub-account journal register?

Has the balance column in the sub-account journal register been removed intentionally?  I am new to gnucash, and first installed gnucash 1.6.5 under Mandrake 8.2.  In this version the balance column was present.  However, when I installed Redhat 9 and gnucash 1.8.1, the balance column in the sub-account journal register was no longer present.  I also tried gnucash 1.8.8 under Redhat 9 and 1.8.7 under Fedora with the same result; no balance column.

Thinking that perhaps I had imagined the column in the first place, I looked at the screen shots on the gnucash website, and sure enough, there is a balance column in the journal register shot.

I have attempted to locate a configuration setting that might control this behavior with no luck.

Am I missing something here?  Your help will be appreciated.
