Full marks to error-diagnosis

Something external stripped the payees from many of my scheduled transactions, 
making Gnucash hang when I tried to enter them.  (It did similar things on my 
Windows partition too.)  Running Gnucash from the command 
line, I was given a link to the discussion at bugzilla, which gave me the 
answer.
