comma in values greater than $999

On my Linux box, values greater than $999 or at least $9999 show up with 
a comma (i.e., $1,000 or $10,000). I got an Apple Powerbook and 
installed gnucash and gconf using fink and the numbers show up as $1000 
and $10000. I wonder if this is a locale issue and googled for a little 
bit but didn't find anything that helped. Any ideas?

I haven't used it enough to notice anything regarding "disappearing 
transactions", but will probably enter data on both the Linux box and 
Powerbook for a week or two to see if anything strange happens.
