What you are actually after is a feature asked for regularly, the ability to 
*close off* books at a particular time point.
This is awaiting another event in Gnucash's life, the port to GTK2.
When this has happened, then new features will be added, but the choice of the 
developer community is to move to the GTK2 and then add new features.
If you do wish to *close off* your books, then there are several workarounds, 
and searching the mailing list will find them for you.
If you do that, do it to a copy of your gnucash file, and then you will always 
have the full unaltered file available for the next manipulation.
