Multi-currency problems 1 of 2

I've trying to move from Quicken to Gnucash. Multicurrency is important
to me so I've been testing that it works OK and I've run into a couple
of problems (possibly caused by how I'm doing things). This email
describes the first.

I set up four test accounts - "US Dollar Bank" and "UK Sterling Bank"
(both of type Bank and with the relevant currency), and "US Dollar
Opening Balances" and "UK Sterling Opening Balances" (both of type
Equity, and again with the relevant currency).

I place opening balances of 1000 dollars and 1000 pounds in the US and
UK banks respectively. That's all; really simple - no other
transactions. I then ask for an "Account Summary" report (under the
Tools menu).

PROBLEM: The resulting report shows that only the "US Dollar Bank" has
any money in it.

Note that my "Default Report Currency" setting is US Dollars (in
Edit->Preferences->International). If I *change* that setting to be GB
Pounds, then a new "Account Summary" report will show the proper value
for the "UK Sterling Bank" but now the "US Dollar Bank" will be wrong.
I can't get both accounts to show their contents properly. I've made
sure that both opening balance dates are the same, and that my report
covers that date. I've also made sure that there is a "Price" entry for
the GBP commodity (my overall default currency is USD). N.B. In the
actual Accounts tree display, both accounts look fine. The problem
arises only when I ask for the "Account Summary" report.

So, am I doing something wrong?

thanks,
tc
