But why disable it? If all you want is to record entries in three bank
accounts, why not just use a spreadsheet program (e.g., Gnumeric)? The
advantages of double entry bookkeeping are so large that I would think you
would wish to use it. The more you use a program like GnuCash, the more you
may find you will use it for additional things. For my personal stuff, I
keep investments, checking account, savings account, credit cards, etc., in
there, and by using double entry, I can get reports for all kinds of things
that a spreadsheet would not be convenient or clear.

For my church (where I am treasurer), I must keep donations by contributer
so I can send out the annual letter of thanks (for the IRS, primarily), as
well as reports so we can plan the next year's budget, etc. Spreadsheet just
would not do it in a convenient way, and I would have to force the
spreadsheet program to do double entry in one way or another.

Even Quicken does double-entry in a half-@$$ed way.
