I have a quite similar problem on my Gnucash (1.8.8.) on a Slackware 10.0.

I can use the euro symbol in the description field of an account (and in all
the other programs - OO, Kwrite, etc.), but the euro symbol is not correctly
displayed in the main window of gnucash.
