Splits

I'm relatively new to gnucash, working on porting my finances from MS
Money (not a trivial matter, but that's another discussion). Perhaps I'm
missing something, but I fail to understand why splits are applied to
stock accounts (which are essentially positions) rather than to the
commodity itself (which represents the stock). It's the commodity/stock
that split, and *all* positions that you hold in a stock (you may have
more than one position in different brokerage accounts) are affected by
that split. As things stand, if you have 3 positions in XYZ and it
splits, you get to apply the split 3 times. It doesn't make sense to me,
but, as I said, I may be missing something. Can someone either enlighten
me as to why the gnucash method is correct, or acknowledge that the
method is incorrect?

Thanks --
/Don
