Failing automake when trying to build version from CVS

Umm, no, you have not. And it's a lot less than you fear, starting from a
normal base install of Gnome on a modern GNU system.

That would be because it's gnome-config - case is important!

Search for gnome-config - the Debian site is a good start, Packages section.
usr/bin/gnome-config libdevel/libgnome-dev
You need development versions of all the packages required for GnuCash - the
ordinary binary packages are NOT sufficient. libgnome is not the same as
libgnome-dev.
Ubuntu will have something equivalent - it may well use the same package
names.
