Could be, will check again this evening but the account file should be just
one currency: USD (as opposed to locale of GBP). In some of the reports GBP
is appearing, not sure why..

Yes, capital gains / losses were entered by hand. I have not used the LOT
support at all (not sure how it worked). (In passing I initially HATED the
manual calculation of capital gain but now I love the idea of actually
seeing the underlying figures)

Just out of interest, can anyone point me to where I can read on the
following topics as they apply to Gnucash
- Lots (and the commands scrub and scrub all)
- Check and Repair
(I could not find either on the gnucash website)
