unbalanced balance sheet

I've been trying to track down an imbalance in my balance sheet.  By 
repeatedly running the balance sheet report, I've tracked down the day 
on which it happened.  I checked all my stock transactions on that day.  
There were only 2 purchases.  One was within the employee portion of my 
stock purchase plan; the other within the employer portion.  There were 
NO sales of stock.

How can one imbalance the balance sheet by purchasing stock????

The dollar and share amounts have been checked against the statements.  
In both accounts (employer and employee), the calculated purchase price 
is identical
