Upgrade to 2.05 won't read saved files!!

You've saved your datafile in the same location that gnucash keeps
meta-data about your file.  After your file was written, gnucash
over-wrote it with the meta data.

~/.gnucash/ is for *GnuCash*'s storage, not your data files.

Look for the most recent date-stamped newtest-[...].xac backup file, and
move it out of ~/.gnucash/books/ ... maybe into ~/Desktop/finances or
something.  Anywhere else, really.  You'll probably want to rename it to
simply "newtest" (or whatever) while you do so.  Then File > Open it.
