xac headers all unreadable!

Please can someone help me.
GNUcash spectacularly crashed my laptop ... the only way I could restart was
to take out the battery!!
Then I found that ALL my xac files had unreadable headers ... can anyone
tell me how I can get one of them (preferably the latest version) to be
readable?
Otherwise I think its a great piece of software ... gulp!
