xac headers all unreadable!

"Unreadable headers"?  What's the exact error you're seeing?

Note that if you save your file as, say, </home/ablot/finances.gnucash>, then
you'll get both </home/ablot/finances.gnucash.[timestamp].xac> and
</home/ablot/finances.gnucash.[timestamp].log> ... but the original .gnucash
file is still your datafile.  The others are backups and "transaction logs",
respectively.
