Gnucash 2.2.0 doesn't start in Windows XP

Hello,
Just wanted to post that I have fixed this problem on my machine. First, I
noticed that running Gnucash created a .gnucash folder in C:\Documents and
Settings\user. When I tried to open the folder I got an "Access Denied"
error message. Using the Simple File Sharing UI (default setting for
Windows XP), this can be fixed by sure that "Make this folder private" was
turned ON for this folder (right-click folder, sharing tab, check "Make this
folder private") After that I could open the .gnucash folder.
I tried running Gnucash again, and again, the process died without even
opening a window. Two more folders were created, .gnome2 and
.gnome2_private, which had the same permissions problem. After correcting
the problem with these, Gnucash started up correctly. However, one more
check shows that two MORE folders, .gconf and .gconfd were created with the
same permission problem, so I fixed those too.
When the folders are created, they only have one group, SYSTEM, with no
permissions set (I checked this by turning Simple File Sharing OFF
temporarily). Clicking "Make this folder private" will set all permissions
to "Allow" for SYSTEM as well as adding the user COMPUTER\user (owner of
C:\Documents and Settings\user, and in my case, also an Administrator) and
setting all permissions to "Allow."

I recently installed Gnucash 2.2.0 but I have been unable to run the
program (nor have I been able to run earlier Windows binaries). I
begin by trying the Start menu; a gnucash-bin process shows up for a
short while, then disappears, leaving an empty .trace file in ../tmp.
After poking around on these lists a little bit, I try to start gconf
manually with "gconftool-2 --spawn". It takes a minute for the
command to finish executing, but when it does finish there is a
gconfd-2 process running. I try running gnucash.bat again, and again
nothing shows up; but the gconfd-2 process is terminated and another
empty .trace file shows up. I'm using Windows XP Professional (ver.
2002 SP 2), run as an administrator.
This sounds a lot like the problem that I'm having with GnuCash on
Windows. Here's the thread that I started:

Does that sounds familiar?
As you can see from the thread, we tried a bunch of stuff, but everyone
ran out of debugging ideas.
Has anyone else running GnuCash on Windows been able to fix a problem
like this?
