Import a Gnucash 1.8.x data file

You'll need to go through your whole data file and find all
the instances of accented characters and make sure you choose
the proper encoding for all of them. It's possible that you
have multiple encodings in the file, because gnucash prior to
2.0 wasn't very good about making sure that your encodings are
correct.

The other things to check:

what, if anything, is printed on the xterm where you start GnuCash?
what, if anything, is in /tmp/gnucash.trace?
