Hello Derek,

If you are new to Linux I don't think I'd recommend going outside
Synaptic. Is there a particular feature in 2.1.4 that you want and is
not available in 2.0.2? I can't think of anything. The biggest
improvement is that now there is a Windows version.

You can think of the version from gnucash.org as "experts only", and now
it's the distribution's job to make a nice Synaptic-based package and
include it in the next version of Ubuntu.

Btw, the version on the website came out a couple of weeks ago. It's
very fresh, no distribution will have it available yet. And like I said,
I can't think of anything in it that you need.

Best,
Daniel.
