Register transactions may not display (2.2.1 on Windows XP)

When opening an account register in a new tab, the account's
transactions may not display. Instead, only the column headings (at
the top) and the current date (at the bottom, to begin entering a new
transaction) are displayed.  This problem does not occur if the
account contains so few transactions that they can all be displayed
without scrolling.

At this point, clicking anywhere inside the register or pressing the
up arrow key will cause the transactions to magically appear.

Has anyone seen this before?
