Report amounts are text, not numbers

If as described Open Office "calc" can open the file, then you can still 
use Excel if you prefer. Just use the Open Office to do the data 
conversion for you. Note that Open Office can be very useful for Excel 
users. MS is rather cavalier about things like making even versions of 
its own applications backward compatible. We had a devil of a time with 
Excel data collected over many years with the dates (data entered while 
using earlier versions) didn't show properly. A pass through (open and 
save) with Open Office fixed that.
