older transcations not shown in ledger

I bet you're using the "General Ledger" (Journal, really), which has an
implicit date range.  Try View > Filter By… to change the date range.

Otherwise, open the register for an account relating to the transactions you
wish to see by double-clicking on the name of the account in the Account tree
page.  If you don't see an Accounts tree, try File > New > New Accounts Page.
