I saw a thread recently regarding an issue with gnucash failing to open a data file with an error message along the lines of "Can't parse the URL <path to file>" I had that issue and eventually found that if I removed all html and txt files from the data directory then gnucash would open. Since these files are just old saved reports, no damage is done to the data - but to be safe, copy the data directory and experiment on the copy first.
