Re. abrupt logout

Further investigation of the problem found this in my logfiles:
dmesg:

[177652.594238] Xgl[10852] trap divide error rip:43bec0 rsp:7fffc35219e0
error:0
[182625.181313] Xgl[2461] trap divide error rip:43bec0 rsp:7fffa6dfa2c0
error:0

According to Bug # 225338, "segfault error 6, and trap divide error"
posted at https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/225338, this is related to an
Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) bug in the Xserver implementation. The
discussion mentions several programs that precipitate the crash, but
only GnuCash caused it on my system. The thread closes with:
"xserver-xgl has been deprecated upstream, and removed from Intrepid.
Closing the bug as won't fix."

My solution then was to upgrade my Ubuntu OS to 8.10 Intrepid Ibex.
Since then I've run three GnuCash sessions, using the original data file
that crashed in Ubuntu 8.04, without any problems.
