How to a migrate my data to another computer?

I did something stupid.  I saved my GnuCash data.

Well, I hope I did. I went File --> Save.  This saved a 50kb file with my
name and no extension along with some log files on my usb disk.  I then
reformatted and reinstalled GnuCash.  I can't open the file I saved.

Did I lose my data?
If so, how can I do this properly in the future?
