gnucash on Vista creates no graphical app window

Not sure this is the right forum but no other seemed appropriate.

I've just purchased a Gateway LT3103 Netbook with Vista SP1.

I installed gnucash 2.2.9.  It installed flawlessly.
When I try to run it, no errors are given and I see gnucash-bin.exe
running in the task manager
but no app window ever appears.

I installed the Vista SP2 pack and got 'No Joy'

I uninstalled 2.2.9 and installed 2.3.2 with the same results.

Does anyone have an explaination for this behavior?
